A bed and breakfast, often referred to as a B&B, is a type of boarding house typically operated out of a large single family residence. The best breakfasts I've ever eaten have been at B&Bs, and that didn't happen by accident. Most B&Bs plan their breakfasts days or even weeks in advance, so you need to let them know ahead of time if you have any special dietary needs or restrictions.
You can get away from the various stresses and responsibilities in your life though and just relax. They provide easy to navigate websites that help narrow down your choices to the select few you are interested in. Sometimes, they might have a maid help with room preparation in the morning, but by and large that person is handling everything. Each owner brings their own special skills to the experience.
In many instances we appreciate what we have back at home more than ever. Although they might own beautiful homes which have been restored and immaculately decorated, most innkeepers don't even make all their income at the inn. Your host can fill you in on local tourist attractions, restaurants, hiking trails and other interesting things to do on your stay. Usually breakfast is served on fine china with silver cutlery, much higher class than disposable plates and cutlery at low priced hotel chains.
You can talk to the innkeeper so that you'll almost sure to be alone if you wabnt your own room. Question number two could be whether to stay at an Inn or an individual cottage. B&B's are required to have fire resistence, a sufficient fire escape plan in place, and smoke detectors in each guest room. Keep in mind that there are many locations for bed & breakfast facilities are often expensive though.
In a private cottage you almost always receive a continental breakfast, left before you arrive. Innkeepers will sometimes ask you to be quiet if you come back to the inn late, out of respect for other guests.
