In some cases an existing inn will relabel itself as a "B&B" to improve business. So you've decided to venture into the world of cozy, intimate bed and breakfasts. The B&B arrangement is actually a very old one, before the 20th century, it was quite normal for country travelers to spend the night at a private house rather than an inn, and the custom persists in many parts of the world.
You won't be forced to interact with other guests, nor will you have to sit down with the innkeeper and look at old family photos. I would be very wary of a facility that wasn't proud to show its exterior and at least one photo of the inside of each room. Usually breakfast is served on fine china with silver cutlery, much higher class than disposable plates and cutlery at low priced hotel chains. They provide easy to navigate websites that help narrow down your choices to the select few you are interested in.
Many people prefer a place in the country, and a good B&B usually fits the bill. As with hotels, there are good B&Bs and bad B&Bs. Many innkeepers have written books on the subject and the availability of information has increased tremendously in recent years. Warmth, coziness and good food aren't the only benefits to staying at a B&B.
But in all the times that my husband and I have stayed at B&Bs, this has never been a real problem. Being away from it for a short period of time can make it much more appealing than it was before. Innkeepers will sometimes ask you to be quiet if you come back to the inn late, out of respect for other guests. I have seen some that are part of a desolate island.
