Many people wake up one day and think, Let's open a bed and breakfast, it will be fun to entertain guests in our home. Their are many myths about B&B's that have their roots in the days before most travelers even knew what a bed and breakfast was. Each room is decorated in an elegant at home way that is easily enjoyed by guests who want comfortable and beautiful surroundings to enjoy while on their trip.
Although they might own beautiful homes which have been restored and immaculately decorated, most innkeepers don't even make all their income at the inn. Your host can fill you in on local tourist attractions, restaurants, hiking trails and other interesting things to do on your stay. While they have enjoyed staying at B&Bs, they haven't seen the inside view of this people intensive industry, the mound of office paperwork, the constant interruptions during the day, and the piles of laundry waiting to be finished. Kitchens and equipment used to serve meals must also be monitored for sanitation.
Many people prefer a place in the country, and a good B&B usually fits the bill. In most cases, particularly with inns of less than ten rooms, the innkeeper is the only person working at there. Most people don't try to force conversation when it becomes apparent that you'd rather enjoy a quiet meal. Most B&Bs are generally compliant with their jurisdiction's laws.
Sometimes an inn will have rules that mystify me. Guests are mostly unfamiliar with these guidelines and tend to overlook any violations. It can also help you to appreciate what you do have around you when you return home. As they are often run by amateurs, with little lodge management experience, strict laws govern the operation of bed and breakfasts, which vary in each jurisdiction.
Each of us has a unique personality so it is understandable why various bed & breakfast locations appeal to us and not others. People tend to find them very mysterious as well as romantic.
