Modern B&Bs often consciously seek to recall earlier days; they are frequently established in attractive older houses that have been renovated and filled with antique furniture. The best bed and breakfasts are small and privately owned. Many innkeepers and former innkeepers have turned to consulting in an effort to increase research information and professional attitudes for would-be bed and breakfast operators.
A note of caution however; if location is a prime concern of yours be very detailed in your quest. Being away from it for a short period of time can make it much more appealing than it was before. Although they might own beautiful homes which have been restored and immaculately decorated, most innkeepers don't even make all their income at the inn. Inkeepers tend to be aware of their guests privacy and do what it takes to preserve it.
A good B&B depends on the inn's location, amenities, and other factors. In most cases, particularly with inns of less than ten rooms, the innkeeper is the only person working at there. Sometimes an inn will have rules that mystify me. If you visit Fredericksburg, Texas (population 9,000) there are literally hundreds of b&b's, reportedly the largest number of b&b's per capita in the nation.
That is quite a length of time but when you get to stay there you will find out why such locations are in demand. If you've avoided looking at B&Bs as an option because of the cost, think again. You should arrive on time, or at least call if that's not going to be possible. But I've never stayed anywhere that had what I would call strange rules.
People tend to find them very mysterious as well as romantic. Some of them are very well known and that makes them difficult to get into.
